OKG AB - Systecon provides LCC perspective on Oskarshamn Nuclear Power Plant

Stricter requirements from authorities and lower electricity prices. That’s the reality for OKG (Oskarshamnsverkets Kraftgrupp), which places higher demands on more efficient operation and maintenance to secure profitability. Now Systecon has been assigned to provide a lifecycle management perspective.

Nuclear power reactors O1, O2 and O3 in Oskarshamn are owned and operated by OKG. Major investments have been made to increase the reactors’ power output, availability and safety. In 2013, when the company needed support to review Life Cycle Cost (LCC) data provided by a supplier in connection with the so-called “Plex” project, a modernization project for reactor O2, Systecon was given the assignment.

Cooperation between OKG and Systecon began in 2005, when a tool for calculating LCC was developed. In addition to the benefits of securing the correct data for preventative and corrective maintenance, the data can also be used for further analysis. This includes calculations for spare part optimization using Systecon’s OPUS10 software, which OKG has a license for.

Another ongoing OKG project is to upgrade the emergency power installation, in part due to stricter requirements from regulatory authorities following the 2011 Fukushima accident. In connection with the pre-study for the project, Systecon performed an LCC analysis to evaluate different alternative solutions for future emergency power. The result from the LCC analysis will be an important aspect when the project reaches the procurement phase.

To meet the demands of the market and the regulatory authorities for high availability and safety, effective operation and maintenance are also important components. For this reason, OKG is investing in recruiting 50 new employees for the maintenance department. Systecon has high expectations to continue this productive cooperation and engage in new opportunities to help OKG develop the business and reach its goals.
